Diamonds take shape deep within the Earth, approximately 100 miles below the surface, where extreme temperature and pressure conditions converge. The carbon atoms in diamonds are intricately bonded in a uniform arrangement, extending in all directions. In stark contrast, graphite, another mineral composed solely of carbon, features a distinct formation process and crystal structure. The stark contrast is evident in their physical properties; graphite is remarkably soft and suitable for writing, while diamond's exceptional hardness is such that only another diamond can leave a scratch upon it.
